Sarlat en Dordogne

The capital of black Périgord, Sarlat is an exceptionally well preserved town. Every alley and courtyard bears witness to its architectural heritage which goes back over 1,000 years. The unique rooftops, the local honey-coloured stone, the turrets and the mullioned windows all contribute to Sarlat's unique atmosphere of tranquil peace.

One of Dordogne's administrative centres, Sarlat spreads over a large area and has almost 10,000 inhabitants. The main administrative centre of the Dordogne is Périgueux with some 31,193 inhabitants. Other large towns nearby are Bergerac (26,053 inhabitants) and Nontron (3,500 inhabitants). The hill to the north of the town is built-up but Sarlat itself is situated in a small valley. We recommend visiting Sarlat on a Saturday, the town's main market day and the best moment to try the local produce on sale, such as duck, strawberries, truffles and walnuts. You will be delighted by so many colours and smells, a feast for all the senses!
